Why Should You Let a Stranger Pick Your Profile Picture on Facebook?
Somehow, the latest researches prove the saying, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” When researchers in Australia studied the profile picture selection process, they found that many have made poor decisions.
In the experiment, scientists asked students to choose two out of 12 pictures that they were most or least likely to choose for a profile pic for social media networks like Facebook, LinkedIn, and Match. Then students were asked to do the same for 12 images of a randomly selected stranger who had already participated in the study previously.
The researchers found that people tended to choose pictures that highlighted positive personality characteristics in line with the context of the social media platform that the photo was for.

However, when scientists showed these pictures to strangers, they asked them to rate how attractive, dominant, trustworthy, competent, or confident the person in the picture appeared. They found that the pictures people had chosen for themselves made a less favorable impression than the photos chosen by others. That’s why scientists stated that, let a stranger pick your profile picture on Facebook if you want to look more attractive, confident, and honest.
When asked about the concept why stranger choose FB profile pictures, the lead author Dr. David White said that,
“Our findings suggest that people make poor choices when selecting flattering images of themselves for online profile pictures, which affects other people’s perception of them.”
In other words, we can’t see ourselves very well, but others can find our beauty. Though the study needs further research to comprehend why this happens, but in the meanwhile, let a stranger pick your profile picture on Facebook and set it as a temporary profile picture on Facebook to see how it works better for you.
