Video streaming with Netflix can be pricey. If you don’t have a generous data cap on your phone or you’re just unable to connect to WiFi, you may have to opt for another way to twiddle your thumbs. However, some folks are smart enough to control Netflix data usage to avert their wireless bill from getting out of hand. Being smart is fairly good. Keeping this in mind, we’ve come up with a how-to tutorial to tell you how to control the amount of data Netflix uses on your phone. In case you’re all set, let’s start the ball rolling out.
Most of us are unaware of the fact that Netflix utilizes a total of 1GB of data per hour and up to 3GB/hour when you’re streaming in HD quality. Watching three hours worth of your favorite movies and TV shows in high definition can easily rack up both data usage and your monthly bill. Nonetheless, for binge-watchers, Netflix endows its users with the ability to manage their data usage.
Now, without further delay, let’s know how to control Netflix data usage on your device.
Control Netflix Data Usage
There are two different ways to manage mobile data usage on Netflix. In case you only want to limit data usage in Netflix on one device, go for the first method. On the other hand, if you want to control Netflix data usage on all devices, which access your Netflix account, opt for the second method.
Method 1: Control Data Usage in the Netflix App
- Hit the Hamburger menu icon situated at the top-left side of the screen
- Scroll down and tap on the App Settings option
- Next, hit the Cellular Data Usage option
Once you’re in the Cellular Data Usage section, you’ll see the six different options: Set Automatically, Off (Wi-Fi only), Low, Medium, High, and Unlimited. In case you select the Set Automatically option, all other options will be grayed out. However, this is not a good choice if you’re looking to control Netflix data usage on your device. So, it’s recommendable to disable this option.
Never want Netflix to stream online content unless your phone is connected to WiFi? If so, the second option, i.e. Off (Wi-Fi only) is just made for you. Alternatively, go with the Low option to minimize data usage. It makes use of up the least data amount – 1GB/four hours – and although the streaming quality may suffer, your data bill will not.
In case your data plan includes some more latitude, feel free to select any of the higher-quality options. But remember that your GB-to-hour ratio will hop considerably with each quality smack you choose.
