Many people share their personal details with others too easily when they are dating online. In order to find the ideal partner, users are ready to disclose their name, place of work, occupation, where they like to hang out, and a lot more. Try not to go gentle.

The researchers have discovered that some of the apps they investigated let potential criminals to identify who is hiding behind a nickname based on the information provided by other users. With the help of this info, it’s possible to find their social media accounts and identify their real names.

One of the experts stated that,

“We informed the developers in advance regarding all the vulnerabilities identified and by the time this content was released some had already been fixed while others were slated for correction in the future.”

The researchers also found that some Android applications were ready to provide too much information to cybercriminals. Quite strange!

Many researchers have warned about the online dating apps. If someone wants to know your whereabouts, some apps will lend a hand. Only OkCupid, Badoo, and Bumble maintain the location data of users under lock and key. All of the other apps specify the distance between you and the person you’re interested in. Well, it’s very simple to determine the exact location of the “prey” by moving around and logging data about the distance between the two of you.

Most of the online dating apps transfer data to the server over an SSL, an encrypted channel, but there are some exceptions. The analytics module employed in the Android version does not encrypt data about the device. Last but not least, the researchers also found out that most of the apps are susceptible to MITM attacks as they do not confirm the authenticity of certificates.
