China’s Tianhe-2 (Milky Way-2) is the second-fastest supercomputer in the world. It is installed at the country’s National University of Defense Technology (NUDT) and deployed at the National Supercomputer Center in Guangzho, China. And, its clock speed is around 33.86 petaflops.
The system has 3,120,000 computing cores made up from 16,000 computer nodes, each comprising two Intel Ivy Bridge Xeon processors and three Xeon Phi coprocessor chips.
Piz Daint maintains its number three position in the list and is the most powerful supercomputer in Europe. Cray XC50 system-based Piz Daint is installed at the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS) in Lugano, Switzerland. It boasts of 19.59 petaflops speed. This supercomputer was reportedly upgraded last year with NVIDIA Tesla P100 GPUs.
