Apple is allegedly well underway in designing its own iPhone power management chips as early as 2018. Currently, the Cupertino-based tycoon hinges on supplier Dialog Semiconductor for processors that are significant, ensuring an iPhone charges properly while consuming less energy.
Apple has thoroughly employed the silicon design in the last few years, ranging from its own A-series CPUs and GPUs found in iPhones and iPads respectively to Apple Watch system-in-a-package. It seems that the next leading edge for Apple’s in-house iPhone power chip will be in the monarchy of battery and power consumption.
Reports suggest that the iPhone power management chips ‘would be the most advanced in the industry’. The company may be able to squeeze extra hours of battery life for iPhones by controlling tasks more proficiently.
“Based on Apple’s current plan, they are set to replace partially, or around half of its power management chips to go into iPhones by itself starting next year.”
iPhone power management chips are one of the highly expensive components after the main application processors, which act as the brain of a device, memory chip or modem. Although Apple already designs its own application processor, it falls back on suppliers such as Samsung for its memory chips and Intel and Qualcomm for its modems.
The iPhone maker has made moves to develop even more of its components by itself. The Apple-designed W1 Bluetooth chip couples its AirPods to an iPhone, whereas the A11 Bionic processor amps up the AI capabilities of an iPhone. Apple is supposed to be building up a chip for Mac laptops that will retain the functionality handled by Intel chips. Plus, it’s also said to be working on its own graphics processors.
The idea to make its own iPhone power management chips will reduce Apple’s dependence on suppliers and will be helpful in controlling costs. By developing the chips in 2018 on its own, Apple will be able to set its own timeline, finding ways to further stand out itself from the crowd. There’re already various companies such as Samsung and Huawei, which design their own chips together with their phones.
iPhone power management chips control the device’s charging function, energy consumption, as well as battery management. So, it can be said that the 2018 iPhones may finally fix the most annoying issue – battery life.
