Though WhatsApp is a tremendous app that provides support for all media types, it may drain out your mobile data very quickly. Even if you’re not browsing the Internet, WhatsApp always runs in the background and consumes your cellular data as soon as you turn it on. And in case you don’t have a generous data cap on your smartphone, hitting the mobile data limit can burn a hole in your pocket. Thankfully, you can limit WhatsApp data usage and stop your mobile data from going over. Here’s how to do so:
Limit WhatsApp Data Usage
Disable WhatsApp Chat Backup with Cellular Data
In case you’re using WhatsApp on an iOS device, it’s recommended to back up your chat to iCloud. Doing so will save your mobile data preventing you from getting the most expensive phone bill ever. In order to disable cellular data for iCloud, navigate to the Settings > iCloud > iCloud Drive section and toggle the switch next to the Use Cellular Data option to Off.
Alternatively, you can choose when you wish to back up your chats such as when you’re at home connected to your WiFi. To do so, go to the Settings > Chat Settings > Backup > Backup Now section of WhatsApp.
On the other hand, if you’re using the messaging app on Android, your chat history is being backed up to Google Drive. To limit WhatsApp data usage, try backing up your chat history only when you’re on WiFi. To do so, open WhatsApp on your Android device, go to Settings > Chats > Chat Backup > Backup Over section, and tap on the WiFi option in the pop-up menu.
Stop WhatsApp from Auto-saving Media
Don’t care about saving the media you regularly get on WhatsApp? If so, turn off the auto-saving option and limit WhatsApp data usage. On iPhone, you need to launch the WhatsApp, head over to the Settings > Chats and Calls section, and toggle the switch that reads Save Incoming Media to Off.
On Android, you can do the same by opening WhatsApp and going to the Settings > Data Usage > When Using Mobile Data section. Next, check the box next to the media option that you want the instant messenger to download.
Make WhatsApp Use Less Data During Calls
WhatsApp even offers you an option to save cellular data during calls. Though it may cause a drastic change in the quality of a call, don’t be surprised if you’re making little calls on a daily basis.
To limit WhatsApp data usage by enabling this option on Android, go to WhatsApp Settings and tap on the Data Usage option. Scroll down to the bottom and check the box next to the Low Data Usage option.
On iPhone, the steps are the same except that you’ll see Data and Storage Usage option and then toggle the switch that reads Low Data Usage option to On.
