BlackBerry Sues Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram over Messaging

Big one – BlackBerry Sues Facebook! Three social network majors have been sued by the once-powerful phone called BlackBerry. According to BlackBerry, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram have infringed its intellectual property without giving any details.

The Canadian enterprise software company, BlackBerry filed a lawsuit against the world’s leading social network Facebook and its subsidiaries WhatsApp and Instagram alleging that all the three social tycoons infringe on its messaging app patents.

The suit was filed by BlackBerry on Tuesday in the Los Angeles’ U.S. Federal Court. BlackBerry states against the defendants that all three “created mobile messaging applications that co-opt BlackBerry’s innovations, using a number of the innovative security, user interface, and functionality enhancing features that made BlackBerry’s products such a critical and commercial success in the first place.”

The suit filed by BlackBerry has not been tested yet in the court. BlackBerry wants the case should be heard by a jury and is expecting financial compensation for the issue in the question, though there is no dollar figure revealed during the court filing by BlackBerry.

BlackBerry said that being a leader in the field of cybersecurity and embedded software, it believes that the three social networking platforms could make great partners in its drive on the way to a securely connected future. Even after filing the suit, the company revealed that it will welcome social leaders for the same.

On the contrary, Facebook indicated that it is not in the mood to settle down by giving money. Facebook’s Deputy General Counsel Paul Grewal said in a statement that Facebook expels the claim made by BlackBerry and promised to fight.

The statement made by Grewal reads,

“BlackBerry’s suit sadly reflects the current state of its messaging business”. “Having abandoned its efforts to innovate, BlackBerry is now looking to tax the innovation of others. We intend to fight.”

This is not the first time the company filed a claim for copying things. Last year, the company charged Nokia for patent infringement and settled after receiving $800 million from Qualcomm. In mid-2016 also, the company sued Avaya, an enterprise communications company.
